Walk Through Two Worlds in One Trek: The Hampta Pass Experience
The Hampta Pass isn’t just a trail — it’s a dramatic meeting point of two completely different worlds. Starting in the lush Kullu Valley, you trek past pine forests, open meadows, and rivers that tumble down from melting glaciers. But cross the 14,000 ft high pass, and everything changes. Suddenly, you’re in Lahaul — a raw, high-altitude desert with towering brown cliffs and endless open skies.

Day : 1
Arrive in Manali (6,700 ft)
Reach Manali and get settled. We do a quick gear check, and meet the trek leader and fellow trekkers. This day is all about acclimatization and prepping ourselves mentally for the trail ahead. Overnight stay in Manali.
Day : 1
Day : 2
Drive to Jobra & Trek to Chika (10,100 ft)
Drive: 2 hours | Trek: 2 hours, 2 km
We hit the road to Jobra, our trek starting point, with winding views of pine forests and waterfalls along the way. From Jobra, it's a gentle hike through a forest filled with silver birch and maple, opening up into the Chika campsite — a wide meadow cradled by rocky cliffs and gushing streams. Perfect first taste of the trail.
Day : 2
Day : 3
Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (11,900 ft)
Trek: 5 hours, 5 km
Today’s trail follows the Hampta River upstream, meandering past wildflowers, grazing sheep, and sometimes even mountain goats. We camp at Balu Ka Ghera — literally “bed of sand” — where river sediments from the past have formed a natural flatbed. The surrounding valley feels like nature’s amphitheater, and the sunset here is something else.
Day : 3
Day : 4
Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass (14,000 ft), then descend to Shea Goru (12,900 ft)
Trek: 8 hours, 9 km
This is the big day. We start early, crossing snow patches and climbing steadily to reach the Hampta Pass. At the top, the entire world seems to shift. Kullu's greenery lies behind, and Lahaul’s barren, majestic terrain stretches ahead. After soaking it all in (and many photos), we begin a steep descent to Shea Goru, our next campsite — a cold desert plain surrounded by massive cliffs.
Day : 4
Day : 5
Shea Goru to Chhatru (10,800 ft) & Drive to Chandratal (if roads permit)
Trek: 4 hours, 6 km | Drive: 2-3 hours
We descend along scree slopes and glacial streams to reach Chhatru, a small road-head village on the Spiti side. If the weather and road conditions are favorable, we drive to the surreal Chandratal Lake — a high-altitude crescent-shaped lake that reflects the sky like a mirror. Overnight camp either at Chhatru or near Chandratal.
Day : 5
Day : 6
Drive back to Manali via Atal Tunnel
Drive: 5-6 hours
We drive back through the dramatic Lahaul terrain and pass through the Atal Tunnel — one of the longest high-altitude tunnels in the world — arriving back in Manali by evening. Just like that, the crossover comes full circle.

Note: Add a buffer day for weather-related delays or to explore Manali!
Day : 6
